Economic Activity in Romania, June 30th, 2009

Business

  • State-owned gas transport company Transgaz Medias will invest an estimated €48.5 million in technical equipment.
  • State-owned company Imprimeria Nationala will invest €40.8 million in the acquisition of equipment and software infrastructure for the printing of biometric passports. Project completion is expected within five and a half years.
  • Romanian canned foods producer Scandia Romana will invest an additional €32.5 million in completing upgrades and renovations for its factory in Sibiu, and in the acquisition of equipment. The initial investment was €30 million.
  • Romanian construction materials producer Cemacon will invest €27 million over several years in increasing the production capacity of its factory in Bacau.
  • Romanian energy distributor Transelectrica invested an estimated €24 million in modernizing its energy stations in Gutinas (Bacau County), Bacau Nord, Suceava Nord and Roman (Neamt County), thus activating its 400kV Moldavian energy circuit.
  • American beverages giant Coca-Cola and American energy distributor CountourGlobal invested €16 million in an electric and thermal energy production plant located near the Coca-Cola factory in Ploiesti, Prahova County.
  • Italian construction and real estate group Euroholding will invest €15 million in the construction of two new prefab construction materials and concrete factories located in Timisoara, Timis County.
  • Romanian coating products manufacturer Köber invested €10-12 million in the first stage of expanding the production capacity of its unit located in Savinesti.
  • Romanian construction materials distributor Arabesque invested €10 million in a new commercial and logistics centre in Oradea with a surface of 30,000 m². This investment is part of their commercial centres network expansion plan for the period 2008 - 2009. Arabesque also plans to invest an additional €10-12 million in a similar centre located in Baia-Mare, Maramures County during the second half of 2009.
  • Danish industrial group Danfoss finalized a €10 million investment in its new Romanian headquarters located in southern Bucharest. The complex includes a production unit for heating systems equipment, a warehouse, and a sales office.
  • Romanian poultry meats and products producer Transavia will invest €10 million in modernizing its local factories and increasing their production in Brasov.
  • The city of Predeal (Brasov County) will invest €4 million in bringing their ski slopes to the international standards required for organizing the Olympic Youth Festival in 2013.
  • Romanian discount retailer Minimax invested €1.5 million in two new stores: one in Cisnadie, Sibiu County, which opened last week; and one in Vulcan, Brasov County which is set to open in July.
  • Romanian fashion company Rafar, part of RTC Holding, invested €1 million in opening its seventh Debehams store. It is located in Baneasa Shopping City commercial complex in northern Bucharest on 1000 m².
  • Romanian HoReCa (hotels, recreation, catering) company Transilvania Hotels & Restaurants invested €500,000 in introducing the Laura Chavin cigar line to the Romanian market, and plans to invest an additional €2 million in the next three years.

Real Estate

  • British investment fund Tri Investments invested €15.5 million in the acquisition of 69 apartments in the residential centre Perla Residence located in northern Bucharest.
  • Romanian businessperson Ionut Prisecariu invested €9 million in the Rapsodia Hotel in Botosani (150 rooms of 3 and 4 stars), expanding his hotel network to four units.

  • Romanian oil company Petrom will invest €500 million in the construction of a new power plant to be located in Brazi, Prahova County, which will become operational in 2012.
  • German retail company Kaufland will invest €50-60 million in the development of 7 new stores through the second half of 2010. Kaufland is targeting small cities with less than 40,000 people like Falticeni (Suceava County), Comanesti (Bacau County) and Campulung Muscel (Arges County).
  • German-Austrian drug store network DM will invest an estimated €45 million in developing a network of 100 stores throughout Romania. There are currently 15 units in Bucuresti, Cluj, Deva (Hunedoara County), Targu-Mures (Mures County), Constanta and Oradea (Bihor County).
  • Romanian clinic network Sanador will invest €40 million in the construction of a private hospital in Bucharest.
  • Romanian agricultural company Hortifruct Bucuresti finalized a €15 million investment in its greenhouse complex located in the northern Bucharest.
  • Romanian automotive company Pro Auto Industries invested €12 million in equipment and installation for its new tire recycling factory, located in Fundulea, Calarasi County.
  • The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development will, for the first time, invest in a privately held Romanian company; the €6 million investment will allow tissue paper producer Pehart Tec (Petresti, Alba County) to expand its production capacity.
  • Romanian Ferrari importer Forza Rossa will invest an estimated €3 million in opening a 500 m² Ferrari store for promotional items in Bucharest.
  • Austrian transportation and logistics company Gebruder Weiss will invest an estimated €2.5-3 million in the development of a new logistics cross-docking terminal in Sibiu. The plot of land used (27,000 m²) cost an additional €900.000.
  • The Romanian Ministry of Tourism will invest €2.4 million in the development of tourism infrastructure in Piatra Neamt, Neamt County.
  • Romanian hotel complex Centre Ville invested €2 million in re-opening its restaurant, Le Bistro, located in the centre of Bucharest.
  • German discount store network Plus invested an estimated €1.5 million in the development of its 75th Romanian unit, located in Otelu Rosu, Caras-Severin County.
    Italian jewelry store network group Sodo Migliori will invest an estimated €1 million in opening two more stores in 2009, in the centre of Bucharest.
  • Austrian oil company OMV will invest €1 million in modernizing its car wash and store networks.
  • Romanian fashion company Rafar, part of the RTC Group, will invest €1 million in the development of two new stores in Bucharest.

  • International hotel network Marriott will invest €14-18 million in the development of a Courtyard by Marriot hotel in Bucharest, set to open in 2011.
  • Romanian real estate company Advanced Development will invest €2.2 million in the development of a new thirteen-flat residential project in the centre of Bucharest.
  • Greek real estate consultancy company More Real Estate Services invested €1.9 million in the acquisition of several properties.
  • Romanian hotel complex Centre Ville will invest €0.75 million in developing its third unit, Elite Light in 2010, located in Bucharest.

  • The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure will invest an estimated €1.5 billion in the development of a 58 km highway sector between Comarnic (Prahova County) and Brasov. The project is set to be completed in 2014.
  • American auto manufacturer Ford will invest €400 million in the technical rehabilitation and modernisation of its units, and in developing new facilities at the platform in Craiova, Dolj County.
  • French auto manufacturer Renault will finalize a €166 million investment in the development of a new centre in Titu, Dambovita County.
  • French utility company GDF Suez, in partnership with state-owned salt producer and distributor Salrom, will invest €100 million in the development of a natural gas storage facility within a salt mine in Ocna Mures, Alba County.
  • The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure will invest an estimated €67 million in the development of road and railway infrastructure access to Danube bridge between Calafat (Dolj County) to Vidin (Bulgaria).
  • State-owned railway transport company CFR Calatori will invest €42 million in repairs and maintenance for 3,459 railway cars.
  • Romanian meat producer and distributor Unicarm invested €30 million in the development of four factories (including bakery, dairy and ice cream facilities) in Vetis, Satu Mare County.
  • German private medical service operator Centrul Medical Unirea will invest €33 million in the development of two specialty hospitals in Bucharest (of €8 million and €25 million investments).
  • The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure invested €25.8 million in the development of a departure terminal at Cluj-Napoca International Airport, Cluj County.
    Romanian subway company Metrorex will invest an estimated €16 million in modernising 79 of the 100 escalators in Bucharest subway stations. The project is set to be completed by July 2011.
  • Indian constructive steel producer Arcelor Mittal Construction invested an estimated €15 million in an environmental project to reduce dust emissions by 95%.
  • Romanian gas transportation company Transgaz Medias will invest €9 million in the development of 90 km of gas pipeline connecting Iasi and Vaslui Counties.
  • Romanian hospital group Euromaterna invested €7 million in the development of an obstetrics and gynaecological hospital in Constanta.
  • Romanian-Turkish foundation "Lumina Institutii de Invatamant" will invest €6 million in the development of a private university in central Bucharest. The project is set to be completed by October 2010.
  • State-owned optical equipment producer IOR Bucuresti will invest €2.9 million in modernising production capacities.
  • Romanian car dealer Radacini will invest €2.5 million in the development of a showroom in Constanta.
  • German private medical service operator Centrul Medical Unirea, in partnership with Greek hospital group Hygeia, invested €2 million in the development of a stem cell collection unit in Bucharest.
  • French construction materials producer Lafarge invested €1.6 million in the development of a warehouse in Oltenita, Calarasi County.
  • Italian leather processing company Romipel invested an estimated €1.4 million in the acquisition of another 37.65% of the leather processing company Pim Sibiu, making it shareholder of 95% in total.

  • Romanian real estate developer Advanced Development, in partnership with Israeli and Austrian investment funds New Horizon and Immoeast, will invest €100 million in the development of a 1,000 apartment residential project in northeastern Bucharest.
    Belgian real estate developer Sunset Properties will invest €70 million in the development of a commercial centre in Galati.
  • Romanian businessperson Viorel Gheorghiu will invest €35 million in the development of two projects: a four-star hotel and an office building in Bucharest.
  • Romanian real estate developer Decons Co. will invest €10 million in the development of one four-star and one five-star hotel in northern Bucharest.
  • Romanian real estate developer Impact Developer & Contractor will invest €7 million in the development of an 80 apartment residential project in northern Bucharest.
